Synopsis Spartacus (1960)
Spartacus (1960) In the last century before the birth of Christianity, destined to overthrow the slave-ridden pagan Roman republic, a Thracian woman's property gave birth to Spartacus. The boy himself was sold into slavery, to work in unforgiving construction. As an adult, Spartacus (Kirk Douglas) is persistent, taking every opportunity to betray his captors. When businessman Batiatus (Peter Ustinov) arrives looking for potential fighters to train at his gladiator school, he buys an uncontrollable fighter, hearing about a guard's hamstring recently. As a trainee, he is groomed and instructed to duel in an arena, and even offers a slave girl for pleasure – Varinia (Jean Simmons) – whom he loves, though refuses to use her when the guards want to witness the two. as if they were animals.

When Roman senator Crassus (Laurence Olivier) arrives, demanding a show for his wife and consort, Spartacus is thrown into a fight to the death for entertainment. Surviving only when the towering, trident-wielding African Draba (Woody Strode) refuses to execute him, Spartacus spontaneously launches a riot, which quickly turns into a mutiny to take over a neighboring school and property before spreading across the countryside. Spartacus led the gladiators in raiding the remote Italian plantations, hoping to build up an army of slaves to fight the Roman garrison who traveled to Vesuvius to quell the revolt. During the process, he is reunited with runaway Varinia and Crassus' Sicilian servant, Antoninus (Tony Curtis). Roman commander Marcus Glabrus (John Dall) leads a company of six cohorts that is ambushed and crushed by a slave revolt, but he is left alive to report back to the Senate that gladiator armies will attempt to peacefully cross Italy into the sea, where they will purchase transport from the pirates. the Cilician sea. If the Roman legions were to get in the way, the rapidly strengthening armies would not refrain from total annihilation.
Far more somber, tragic, and dark than the previous year's "Ben-Hur," "Spartacus" is rich with evocative morbidity and realistic horrors of slavery. Even though 1960s filmmaking had limitations on thematic content, there was still a certain amount of cruelty, bloodlust, sexuality (implicit rape, disguised nudity, lots of oily skin, and homosexual seduction), and violence (the most brutal off-screen, but its fair share of showing severed limbs and visualized red blood). The presence of political betrayal, destruction, and usurpation of power is a similar new inclusion, topped with a fat, corrupt mastermind (Charles Laughton in the role of Gracchus) and colossal rebellion instead of personal revenge.
