American History X is a crime drama that became Tony Kaye's directorial debut. The background of the script, written by David McKenna, is based on his childhood to adolescence in San Diego in looking at white supremacy and the Neo-Nazi movement that he often sees in the punk-rock lifestyle.

Shown with a dark story that is not structured chronologically, in fact some of the flashback scenes that are shown make us understand what happened, and our questions about the root of the problem will be answered in the last flashback which should be the earliest scene in the narrative of the story.

The film opens with a surprising scene. Danny (Edward Furlong) runs to tell his older brother, Neo-Nazi character Derek (Edward Norton), that some African-American teenagers have smashed the windshield of his car in front of the house.

Derek immediately took his gun and without a second thought shot one of them dead and killed another by stomping his head on the curb. The court sentenced Derek to three years in prison. While in prison, he was employed in the laundromat with African-American prisoner Lamont, who became his friend.

Derek also had problems with a group of prisoners who had the same understanding as him, but instead tortured him while taking a bath. Meanwhile, Danny with his new look like Derek and his former Neo-Nazi group are starting to set out on a path to become like his older brother.

After Danny wrote a review about Mein Kampf, a propaganda book written by Adolf Hitler, Principal Sweeney gave Danny another assignment with the title American History X which would review Derek who was also his former student.

Starting from here, there are many flashback scenes as the background for what Danny wrote about Derek before the night of the incident at the beginning of the film. It shows how charismatic Derek is in defending his friend in a basketball game, how Derek argues with other family members about his understanding, and several other things.

After being released from prison, Derek turned into a person who really loves his family, especially his mother's health. He decides to get out of the Neo-Nazi group that Cameron has mastered, which he thinks is starting to poison his sister's thoughts as he did to her in the past.

His actions at a party harm Cameron and Seth. Derek tries to change Danny's erroneous view that he had also understood before.

The next morning, Derek drives Danny to school and has a chance to meet the police chief and Sweeney who asks him to sort things out with the racist group he just left. At school, Danny is shot in the toilet by the African American student he has a problem with.
