Who doesn't know THE WARRIORS (1979), I guarantee everyone will know that, because not only the film is selling well in the market, but the game THE WARRIORS (1979) is also very popular in the market. but this time what I will discuss is the film, okay?

Can you count, suckers?” … “I say the future is ours … if you can count
Can you dig it?” … “Caan youu dig it??” … “Caaan youuu dig it???

Those are two sentences from the charismatic speech of Cyrus, a leader of the most influential Riffs gang in New York City. Some of the complete sentences are found at the beginning of the cult classic film about street gangs, namely The Warriors which tells the adventures of street gangsters fighting slander, binding solidarity and maintaining the existence of their identity.

The film, directed by action film specialist Walter Hill, which was adapted from a novel by Sol Yurick, was so admired and adored, that it was popularized through its video game format in 2005.

In the opening credits, an interlude scene is shown between members of the The Warriors gang itself, which is based in the Coney Island area of New York. They will attend a large gathering between gangs initiated by Cyrus in Van Cortlandt Park, Bronx area, New York City.

One by one, the Warriors gang were introduced in the dialogues: Cleon (Dorsey Wright) as the leader, Swan (Michael Beck) as the War Chief, while the members were Ajax (James Remar), Snow (Brian Tyler), Cochise (David Harris) , Cowboy (Tom McKitterick), Rembrandt (Marcelino Sanchéz), Vermin (Terry Michos) and Fox (Thomas G. Waites).

The hallmark of The Warriors gang is wearing an old maroon leather vest in the style of the Indian Tribe, with an oversized logo emblem on the back.

They arrived at the location while listening to Cyrus' speech that wanted to unite the entire gang and collaborate to strengthen the strength of the threat from law enforcement.

Meanwhile, a number of police cars began to arrive to ambush, Luther (David Patrick Kelly), the leader of the Rogues gang, suddenly shot Cyrus dead in the crowd.

In a state of panic along with the police raid, Cleon who was near the shooting was slandered by Luther, so that he became the accused.

Provoked, the Riffs gang immediately beat Cleon to a pulp, and chased The Warriors who immediately fled back to Coney Island. Because Cleon is presumed dead, Swan and Ajax have an argument in leading the gang.

Shortly thereafter, the leader of the Riffs orders the entire gang to hunt down The Warriors who caused Cyrus's death, with a hidden message over the radio broadcast.

On their way home after some of their stunts, a girl from the Orphans gang named Mercy (Deborah Van Valkenburgh) eventually joins them.

Then their real adventure had just begun!

Shaber and Hill overhauled the narrative of The Warriors from the story in their novels that exposed aspects of reputation, family, sexuality and survival, focusing on aspects of survival, the existence of identity between members and gang identity, as well as improving reputation for slander that occurred, as well as testing solidarity while they are in action.

No particular gang is positioned as an antagonist, except for the Rogues in the film version. In the novel version, the story tells the gang The Dominators (in the film version called The Warriors) as the protagonist, on the way to Coney Island, fighting with a number of gangs, by highlighting the "manly" side.

Perhaps the best film The Warriors is the best film directed fantastically by Hill, through various styles that look very cool and dynamic, from the beginning to the end of the story, dialogue, action and choreography, and able to boost adrenaline accompanied by thick thriller elements through the night setting. day in New York City.

In a socio-cultural context, The Warriors gang features multi-racial members such as Cleon, an Afro-America, Swan and Ajax, who are white, or Rembrandt, a Latino (Mexican-American). Likewise with the gangs, there are special members of white, black, Latino and even Asian.

Each actor/actress brings their character to life brilliantly and accentuates their own uniqueness, like Cleon, an authoritative and formidable leader.

Swan who doesn't talk much but is brave, Ajax who likes to fight, pretentious but not smart like Cochise, and Cowboy who is calm, friendly and a bit gloomy.

While Fox is the smartest and always curious, it is different with Rembrandt as the youngest member and always on the alert, spraying the letter "W" as a gang marker in various locations.

Snow is similar to Rembrandt, only smarter as a fighter. And Vermin, who is flamboyant and relaxed, but less intelligent.

Nothing beats the charisma of a Cyrus, who managed to charm hundreds of New York city gangs, in a big gathering at the beginning of the story. The sentences of his speech were blaring, one of which was the quotes listed at the beginning of this article.

The Riffs gang looks terrible with so many troops, plus the mysterious Masai character, in place of Cyrus.

The antagonist named Luther with a voice like that of a woman, is fitting to be labeled as a delinquent and a scoundrel, reflected in his evil nature and attitude.

Do not forget the character Mercy, played by Deborah Van Valkenburgh, as a woman who is bored with a life that does not have anything meaningful, so she challenges The Warriors as well as herself to adventure to get new sensations.

Many other gangs are introduced in this film, with different characteristics such as the Riffs (styled hip-hop and rap), Rogues (styled bikers without motorbikes, similar to S&M), Turnbull AC's (styled fascism), Orphans (styled bums), Lizzies ( gang of girls), Punks (with roller skates), Boppers (looking dapper), Hi-Hats (like pantomime) and so on.In a socio-cultural context, The Warriors gang features multi-racial members such as Cleon, an Afro-America, Swan and Ajax, who are white, or Rembrandt, a Latino (Mexican-American). The eye-catching and iconic, of course, the Baseball Furies gang, wearing baseball jerseys, their faces also in make-up in the style of the rock band KISS. With their cynical grins, adding to the impression of being mysterious and scary at the same time.

Like a western movie in the modern world, The Warriors movie is synonymous with fighting between groups or street gangs, as if the world belongs to them through various scenes that take place, visualized very dynamically, aesthetically, and elegantly.

Hill's style in working on a similar film, was repeated several years later in the film Streets of Fire (1984).

Taking the camera angle was so impressive, as when the Warriors gang was walking in an area, the Orphans gang appeared one by one from behind the roof of the building.

Or when The Warriors exit the train station, suddenly confronted by the Baseball Furies gang who are in the middle of a deserted highway, in a circle, surrounding them. Until finally the Furies chased them into a park, then a fight began.

Or when The Warriors are at the train station, the Punks gang appears following them from a distance.

The coolest scene is when The Warriors, exhausted and desperate, walk hand in hand and are followed by a car driven by Rogues towards the climax towards the end of the story accompanied by the song In the City.

A number of dramatic fight scenes are so stunning because of the choreography that is designed, it seems to combine the style of a musical film with the reality of brutal action, without the need for bloody violence, really entertaining. One of his memorable actions was a fight with the Punks gang in the train station toilet!

The score, composed by Barry De Vorzon, seems to use a combination of disco and electronic music.

Uniquely, the soundtrack of this film also accompanies certain scenes, through the spotlight of a Radio DJ who sends messages from the Riffs gang to The Warriors, through several songs with rock, blues, jazz, soul and pop genres.

The Warriors is an iconic cult classic film, not only about the actions of street gangs, but how they react to evil slander, through the bonds of brotherly solidarity in conflict and division, as well as questioning the existence and proof of identity in their community groups that are under threat.
