  This film is a continuation of the film Sonic the Hedgehog. Directed by Jeff Fowler, and written by Patrick Casey, Josh Miller, and John Whittington. 

 Ben Schwartz returns to voice Sonic along with Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik and James Marsden and Tika Sumpter as Tom and Maddie Wachowski; Idris Elba as Knuckles

 Following the success of Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) and with plans for a film series, Paramount Pictures announced a sequel in May 2020.

 Filming took place from March to June 2021 in Vancouver and Hawaii.

 Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is scheduled to premiere in the United States on April 8, 2022 by Paramount Pictures in association with the Sega Sammy Group.

An anthropomorphic blue hedgehog that can run at supersonic speeds. Sonic settles on Earth as a new member of the Wachowski family with Tom and Maddie after defeating his arch nemesis, Dr. Robotnik, in the first film. With Tom and Maddie on vacation, Sonic meets Tails and embarks on a journey to find the powerful emerald before Robotnik and Knuckles find him first.

A young anthropomorphic fox that can fly on its two tails. O'Shaughnessey is the only voice cast member from the game Sonic the Hedgehog to reprise his role for the film.

A more serious but gullible anthropomorphic red echidna. He is a persistent emerald hunter. Although aggressive and short-tempered, Knuckles is an experienced formidable fighter with superhuman strength and gifted with the ability to slide and climb walls. After being tricked by Eggman into joining him, he came to Earth looking for emeralds with great power

• Jim Carrey as Doctor Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik:

 A mad scientist and Sonic's arch nemesis, whose goal is to capture Sonic and use his super speed to rule the world, but is instead defeated by a blue hedgehog and also has evidence/records of his existence which were later deleted by the US government. Now crazier than ever as a result of being stranded on a mushroom planet for nearly three months, he vows to return to Earth, take revenge on Sonic and achieve his new dream of world conquest. Eggman teams up with Knuckles to find the emerald, knowing that he is only using it to achieve his goals

• James Marsden as Thomas Michael "Tom" Wachowski: Sheriff of Green Hills, Montana, who helps Sonic recover his ring and defeats Eggman in the first film
• Tika Sumpter as Maddie Wachowski: Tom's veterinarian wife who helps Sonic and Tom stop Eggman in the first film
• Adam Pally as Wade Whipple: Deputy head of Tom's
• Natasha Rothwell as Rachel: Maddie's older sister who dislikes Tom
• Lee Majdoub as Agent Stone: Eggman's former assistant. Stone has replaced his boss after Sonic defeated and sent him to the mushroom planet
